David Malouf, born 1934 in Australia to Lebanese-Anglo parents, is one of the most important and internationally renowned Australian writers. His poetry, novels, short fiction, and plays concern themselves with, among other things, the colonial settling of Australia; the contact between European settlers and Aborigines; the multicultural makeup of Australian society; and the complex relationships that Australians hold to Europe.
