Prof. Dr. Josef van Genabith

Lecture on December 9th, 2021
KI und Mehrsprachigkeit

Prof. Dr. Josef van Genabith is the head of the research area 'Multilingual Technologies' at the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence DFKI, Saarbrücken and professor for translation-oriented language technologies at Saarland University. He is working on the development of language technologies, which not only have a strong influence on the daily work of translators and language mediators, but also in many areas of AI-supported multilingual language processing. Van Genabith's expertise in this area will be trend-setting for the developments at the FTSK in the context of the Fellow's stay in Germersheim. In research projects and publications, he has examined multilingual language processing using a wide variety of computer linguistic methods.

Over the last year, the hostess Prof. Dr. Silvia Hansen-Schirra set up a neuro-laboratory with eye tracking and EEG equipment to research intercultural and interlingual skills and processes in translation and interpreting. For projects that have already started (mainly doctoral projects, but also innovative teaching projects), van Genabith's computational linguistic expertise is the ideal source of inspiration, who on the one hand can contribute his experience to ongoing projects, but on the other hand can also discuss and develop future research potential. Specifically, a joint DFG proposal is planned.

During his stay, van Genabith will give a lecture on artificial intelligence and multilingualism and a workshop with MA and PhD students. In addition, he and the TRACO (Translation & Cognition Center) team will outline a DFG proposal in a planning meeting so that it can be submitted as a joint proposal as soon as possible.
