The question of the connection between cultural achievements and their description in the work of Hans Blumenberg, that is one of the most influential of German philosophy in the 20th century, is examined from an international perspective that interconnects German and American reception. As the 'phenomenology of history', this work addresses cultural achievements through the method of description.

If 'description', regarded as a practice of generating text and knowledge, from an interdisciplinary perspective of literary studies, the main question is how exactly - right down to the rhetorical-stylistic facture - the writing methods of this author relate to the respective objects of his texts and which forms of literarization can be observed.
