2. call for applications in 2021 by the Center for Intercultural Studies (ZIS) / JGU's interdisciplinary research platform

Due to the planned allocation in 2021, the Center for Intercultural Studies (ZIS) will be able to support relevant scientific projects. Proposals aimed at collaborative research will be given particular priority. The content focus should be on 'Politics of Translation', 'Processes and Forms of Cultural Opening and Closing' or 'Migration and Mobility'. Particularly welcome are activities that are suitable for promoting the discussion about central terms, concepts and models of the humanities and social sciences intercultural research. Since the ZIS is also explicitly committed to promoting young talent, we would like to expressly encourage people from this group to submit applications. The following formats are eligible: For symposia and conferences, the maximum funding is € 2,500; for fellow stays, the maximum funding amount can be up to € 10,000, depending on the person's stay and reputation. The aim is still to strengthen internationalization and interdisciplinary research in the field of interculturality through these meetings. In connection with the funding of fellowships, it is expected that the invited fellows will be involved in the discussion of current research projects in addition to lectures and possible courses and that, following their stay, a larger third-party funding application (e.g. at of the DFG).

Due to the current situation, online events and other measures that serve to support third-party funding applications in preparation are also funded. We kindly ask you to submit relevant applications by June 6, 2021. You can find an overview of the projects and events funded by the center to date on the ZIS website.

The applications are to be addressed to the spokesperson of the center and to be sent digitally to the scientific coordinator Ms. Spickermann in due time.


In addition, the ZIS can support the funding of more extensive (project) research projects for which an application for intra-university research funding level 1 is sought, provided that they meet the criteria of the ZIS (in particular "interculturality" and "interdisciplinarity"). They are discussed and assessed in advance in the ZIS and, after evaluation, submitted with a recommendation from the ZIS.


The Center for Intercultural Studies funds exclusively intercultural conferences and guest professorships that are organized by members of Mainz University and which advance discussions of interculturality. ZIS does not offer external funding. The requested events should take place in 2021.
