"Interkulturalität", "hybridity," and "métissage" as Paradigms for Interpreting the Texts of Québec’s "écriture migrante"

Literary and cultural studies in various languages have developed specific vocabularies in discussing contact between cultures (the term "Interkulturalität" dominates discussions in German, whereas "hybridity" is used in English and "métissage" in French). The differences between these terms are not merely of a linguistic kind but reflect the embeddedness of the concepts in discourses of diverging theoretical premises and objectives. After an analysis of the terms with their various connotations, we will apply them to a study of francophone Canadian immigrant texts with the goal of developing a poetics of the "écriture migrante."
