Hollywood and Orient

The project focuses on an interdisciplinary analysis of cinema in the Middle East and the depiction of Middle Eastern reality in national and international, especially US-American, European, and Indian film productions. With the help of the various methodological approaches of the participating disciplines, the project aims to manifest the intercultural significance of films and to pinpoint the incendiary nature of the transfer of stereotypes about Islam and the "Orient." An interdisciplinary research group and an international research network "Cinema and the Middle East" (bringing together over 100 scholars from 14 countries) have been established.
