The Byzantine empire, a rich synthesis of Roman civic tradition, Greek culture, and Christian religion, was a multicultural and multinational form of state. In two volumes for northern and southern Syria, project members will catalogue the archaeological monuments from the Byzantine era and examine the Greek, Latin, Syrian and Arabic literary and epigraphic sources. The collected texts and sources will be compounded and made accessible in a database containing place names and designations as well as all relevant textual sources and information pertaining to the catalogued monuments.
