Townsend, Lucas Dr.

Who am I?

I have been a lecturer and researcher in English Literature and Culture at Johannes Gutenberg-Universität Mainz. In 2024, I received my PhD from the University of Roehampton, London, UK, and have taught at universities in both the UK and the USA (where I am originally from). I am the Associate Editor of the International Journal of James Bond Studies, and am also a Trustee of the Graham Greene Birthplace Trust Charity.

My current research is engaged in exploring the relationship of Ian Fleming to wider literary cultures and authors of modernism, intermodernism, and thriller fiction in mid-century Britain. I have previously published articles on a variety of genre fiction authors.

My research interests include:

  • Twentieth century literature, culture, and history
  • Modernism, intermodernism, and postmodernism
  • Genre fiction and films
  • Art and architecture in literature
  • Global networks, technologies, and simulacra since 1945
  • Authors including: Ian Fleming, Graham Greene, Eric Ambler, T. S. Eliot, Daphne du Maurier, J. G. Ballard, Muriel Spark, and their milieu.

What do I teach?

In addition to introductory courses, my teaching focuses on the twentieth and twenty-first centuries in Britain, with courses that cover history, culture, literature, and media produced since 1900. Specifically, I teach classes on genres such as espionage or detective fiction, or literary movements such as modernism. I have also led courses on the English seaside resort, modern architecture in literature, the Victorian adventure novel, and the James Bond phenomenon.

What theses do I supervise?
I am happy to supervise theses that connect with any of my research interests, especially those working with genre fictions across different types of media (including literature, films, video games, etc.)
