The Department of English and Linguistics consists of the following research and teaching fields:
- American Studies
- English Literature and Culture
- English Linguistics
- Fachdidaktik/Teaching of English as a Foreign Language
- General Linguistics
- Language Typology, inclusive Southeast Asian and Japanese Studies
Each of these subdivisions have their own distinct profile, which represents their own respective scholarly orientation and their versatile academic staff. In addition, the subdivisions each network with various other institutions via cooperations which in turn influence their thematic and methodological outlook.
