Paul Hummel

After completing vocational training followed by a practical year as a paramedic, Paul Hummel first studied at the Albert Ludwigs University of Freiburg and during an Erasmus stay at the Université de la Réunion in France. He completed his two combined bachelor's degrees in Geography & Sports Science (Poly-B.Sc.) as well as in Political Science (B.Sc.) in August 2020 with his bachelor's thesis on the relationship between Orientalism and current touristic photography in Tangier, Morocco.

He then moved to Mainz to study the program "Human Geography: Globalization, Media and Culture" (M.A.) at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. For his master's thesis, he explored issues at the intersection of political/indigenous identity and music among the P'urhépechan people in Mexico, for which he made the documentary Raíces y Brotes through filmic approaches to geography. After two years working for the German Development Cooperation (GIZ) for which he supervised projects in French-speaking Africa (especially in the Sahel), he has been working as a PhD student and research assistant in the Human Geography research group since October 2023.
