How can natural selection simultaneously function on queen and worker traits in social insects, when such extremely different phenotypes are based on the same genome? This is a fundamental problem in evolution, and the answer lies in gene expression differences between the castes, as gene expression differences between castes facilitate the polymorphic development. However, simple theoretical models also predict that at the same time genes with divergent expression patterns may be exposed to weakened natural selection, a prediction partly supported by observed increased evolutionary rates of caste biased genes. In my talk, I use comparative transcriptomics data from ants in order to study evolution of caste biased genes, and suggest that carefully taking into account the complexity and constraints of gene function is essential in order to unravel the evolutionary causes and consequences of caste biased gene expression. ...

Abstract: The production of bioactive natural products is prevalent in bacteria, and these small molecules are thought to be important in interspecies interactions within complex mixed bacterial communities, such as those found in soil and the human gut. Understanding the function and regulation of biosynthetic pathways in the environment may aid in the search for novel small molecules with therapeutic potential based on ecological rationale, but the vast majority of environmental bacteria have never been cultured, and therefore culture-independent methods must be used. In this talk I will present our work using shotgun metagenomics and metatranscriptomics to investigate natural product biosynthesis in situ in the microbiomes of several marine invertebrates (tunicates, bryozoa and sponges). I will also discuss our efforts to develop bioinformatic methods to obtain up to hundreds of microbial genomes from single metagenomes....
