Faculty 08 is involved in the following DFG Priority Programs:
The Priority Program (Schwerpunktprogramm) SPP 1294 'Atmospheric and Earth System Research with HALO' supports research for the investigation of atmospheric and Earth system related processes. HALO is a Gulfstream G-550 aircraft specifically equipped with numerous in situ and remote sensing instruments. It enables measurements up to an altitude of 15 km within a range of 9000 km; HALO may carry an instrumental payload of up to 3 tons.

As a central science case of this application we plan to join twounique features that are existing only for trapped Rydberg ions andhave no counterpart in the systems of neutral Rydberg atoms or intrapped ions in low electronic levels only - that is the combination ofelectric charge and large electric polarizability: The charge of trappedions provides a ideal means to control their position by applying timedependentelectric fields acting via the strong Coulomb interaction.

The main objective of the priority program on skyrmionics is fundamental research towards the development of devices and applications based on topological spin solitons, alluding to skyrmions as most prominent examples. It is motivated by the discovery of skyrmion lattices and isolated skyrmions in magnetic materials exhibiting bulk or interface inversion-asymmetry and associated Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Skyrmions can be found in bulk compounds and tailored thin film and nano-systems.
