A "Bachelor of Science in Mathematics" provides a basis for the acquisition of a broad, science-oriented general education in mathematics. A Bachelor's degree can be the first professional qualification for some occupational fields or enable graduates to continue their studies in other related academic fields. However, most of our mathematics students continue on to complete the Master's program.
The standard period of study, including writing the Bachelor's thesis and taking final exams, amounts to three years (six semesters).
On his page we will give you all of the necessary information about this study program, including a study plan, a module handbook and bylaws regulating the terms of studies and examinations.
If you still have further questions, please contact the students' counselor or the students' office.
Program structure
The Bachelor of Science in Mathematics program comprises a total of 180 credit points (ECTS), which corresponds to a duration of six semesters.
The mathematics part of the program is constructed as follows:
In addition to the listed lectures, students are required to attend two seminars which, besides providing mathematical skills and knowledge, also give students the possibility to acquire and practice independent research and presentation skills.
Every module is completed by an exam. The grades are used to determine the overall grade achieved in the Bachelor program. The Bachelor thesis is written on subjects covered in the advanced modules. It is expected to be finalized during the course of the sixth semester so that final examinations can take place at the end of the sixth semester.
In the overview on the right hand side, you can see which minor subjects are available.
For continuing your studies towards a Master’s degree, the University of Mainz offers three different Master’s programs:
- Mathematics,
- Mathematics, focusing on Computer Science, as well as
- Computational Sciences.
