Graduate School of Excellence Materials Science in Mainz organizes international NewSpin3 conference

Conference and summer school brings together experts and young researchers in the areas of spintronics in complex matter and cold atom model systems

The Graduate School of Excellence Materials Science in Mainz (MAINZ), which is a cooperation of researchers from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU), the University of Kaiserslautern, and the Max Planck Institute for Polymer Research in Mainz, currently hosts the third NewSpin conference. After the first NewSpin conference in Utrecht, entitled "NewSpin: Spin manipulation in cold atoms and condensed matter" and "NewSpin2: Spin physics and topological effects in cold atoms, condensed matter, and beyond" hosted in College Station, the MAINZ Graduate School of Excellence has decided to join forces and organize "NewSpin3: Spin-phenomena – From Model Systems to Complex Matter." This international conference and associated summer school brings together both experts and young researchers in the areas of condensed matter and cold atom physics where phenomena originate from the spin property. These are very active topics and this workshop intends to facilitate the exchange of ideas and cross-collaborations going from model systems to complex solid state materials.

The conference takes place from April 2-5, 2013 and is followed by a five-day summer school where junior researchers can learn about other fields outside their specialty from experts in those areas in a more pedagogical format and hence generate a more natural link between the fields in the next generation.

Major financial support for the NewSpin3 conference is provided by the Thematic Network SpinNet between Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, Tohoku University, Stanford University, and IBM, the Collaborative Research Center "Condensed Matter Systems with Variable Many-Body Interactions", and the Mainz-MIT Seed Fund.
