"BilWiss" stands for "Broad Pedagogical Knowledge and the Development of Professional Competence in Teacher Education". Within the longitudinal study on teacher candidates, the main focus of “BilWiss-Beruf” is to analyze the relevance of broad pedagogical knowledge for teachers’ professional behavior. In particular, we ask how broad pedagogical knowledge, taught at university, affects teaching behavior and how this knowledge is acquired during university and the teacher induction phase (Referendariat).Teacher candidates will therefore complete a test on broad pedagogical knowledge as well as self -reports on competence aspects. These scales are developed following the standards of the German Board of Education and comprising teaching, education, evaluation, and innovation. Moreover, students will evaluate teachers’ professional competence, assessing their instructional quality (such as cognitive activation, classroom management, individual learning support) as well as teachers’ education, evaluation, and innovation skills. In order to capture different aspects of (behavioral) competence, computer based methods are applied. While teachers’ professional perception of instruction will be carried out by the “Observer”, teachers’ diagnostic competence will be measured via the “Schülerinventar” method. Finally, intra- and interindividual differences in teachers’ competence might be explained by different learning opportunities during teacher induction phase. Therefore, measurements are carried out at the end of the teacher induction phase as well as 18 months later. In addition, comparing two cohorts of teacher candidates with different amounts of training allows evaluation of the recently introduced and shortened teacher induction phase with regard to teachers’ professional development.
