MD-PhD/PhD Program

The MD/PhD-PhD Program in Translational Biomedicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz within FTN/rmn² and TransMed is a structured training program which combines biomedical and translational research with clinical training elements. Whereas medical graduates face the problem of acquiring research skills and coping with clinical obligations at the same time, natural science graduates need to gain insight into relevant unmet medical needs and get access to patient material.

The aim of this program is to enable young medical graduates and natural science graduates to become future leaders in biomedical research, both in academia as well as in the pharmaceutical industry.

1. MD/PhD Program in Translational Biomedicine for Medical Graduates
An integrated training curriculum for medical graduates interconnected with clinical training/residency in the specialist disciplines. This array of basic and translational research education will be integrated into their residency program in the respective clinical discipline.

2. PhD Program in Translational Biomedicine for Natural Science Graduates
An integrated training curriculum for natural science graduates. One of its major goals is to bridge the gap between physicians and natural scientists thereby increasing the interaction between them. In addition to formal training in translational research, trainees of this program will be familiarized with the workflow at a clinical institution and introduced to the regulatory issues of patient-oriented research. Thus, although focused on laboratory bench work, natural scientists will also get insight into clinical procedures, see patients whose diseases they are interested in, and learn to cope with regulatory obligations associated with clinical research.

Information about how to apply can be found on the website of the Mainz Research School of Translational Biomedicine (TransMed).
