Requirements / organisational issues

Basic knowlegde of partial differential equations and linear algebra, as well as fundamentals in classical mechanics and fluid mechanics is highly desirable.

Digital teaching

Currently, we plan on a lecture in presence. If the pandemic situation will require, we will switch to a digital format.

Contents

The lecture will cover fundamental theories of balanced and unbalanced modes of atmospheric motion, and will discuss secondary circulations as a response to perturbations of balance. Specifically, we will discuss:
- balanced and unbalanced motion in the shallow water model
- 3D quasi-geostrophic theory and the omega equation
- baroclinic instability
- Eliassen secondary circulation
- 3D Rossby waves
- internal gravity waves
- 3D and 2D turbulence
