Requirements / organisational issues

The lecture introduces all relevant processes important for understanding  of ``climate change''. Starting from the IPCC report (IPCC-Intergovernmental Panel  on Climate Change, Fifth Assessment Report), we discuss both the anthropogenic (i.e. caused by human activities) and natural climate change. Terms like greenhouse effect, radiative forcing or climate-coupling will be explained from the physics point of view. The used approximations as well as open questions like the impact of the climate change on the atmospheric dynamics will be discussed. Finally, processes related to the carbon cycle and natural variability of climate will be considered (e.g. Milankowitsch cycles, solar variability, ice ages with their glacial and interglacial variability). In the last third of the lecture climate-ozone interaction as well as geo-engineering will be discussed. In particular, the impact of stratospheric ozone loss (the so-called ozone holes) on climate and the new ideas how to mitigate the impact of climate change will be introduced. The lecture is addressed not only to master students in meteorology but also in other science-oriented disciplines.
