Requirements / organisational issues

If you want to take this course, it is assumed that you have attended the two earlier courses on atmospheric dyamics taught at JGU Mainz, or that you have knowldege which is roughly equivalent to those two courses.


Digital teaching

The course will most likely be taught using MS-Teams. I encourage my students to follow each lecture and participate by asking questions and contributing to the discussion. In addition, the live sessions will be recorded and hand-written notes will be provided for your further study.

  1. Recap of the barotropic model, enhanced by a computer lab that allows you to explore the barotropic model with simple numerical simulations

  5. 3D wave mean-flow interaction
  6. Symmetric instability

Additional information

This course includes a few problem sets that are handed out and have to be solved as well as a computer lab. For the computer lab you will be provided with python code allowing you to run the barotropic model in a simple model-configuration. It would be advantageous if you can run python on your local computer, with if that's a problem we will find a way around.
