Mathematics and School

The Mathematics and School lecture series was launched in the summer semester 2009 by the Association of Friends of Mathematics at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz in collaboration with the JGU Institute of Mathematics. It has been held regularly on the first Tuesday of every month during lecture periods. External and internal speakers present subjects related to the wider topic of mathematics in school to an audience of students and teachers. After the lectures, students and teachers can meet at a reserved table at a local restaurant to have dinner together and exchange their views on the subject of the evening lecture. From winter term 2010/11, the lecture series has had the official approval of the Institute of Education of the State of Rhineland-Palatinate, which has recognized that it serves the interests of education. The questions that arise during the lectures and subsequent discussions form the basis for the planning of continuing education courses for teachers by the Didactics work group of the Institute of Mathematics at JGU.
