The Management of Loss: Politics of Life and Death in Minas Gerais (Brazil)

Beyond their momentary impacts, catastrophic events mark the beginning of long-lasting processes of political, social, and cultural reordering. This often includes the provision of governmental and non-governmental care and assistance, as well as the rearrangement of social categories and of the relations between various actors. This project focuses on the consequences and the repercussions of the 2019 collapse of the tailings dam of a mine waste disposal basin in Brumadinho, a small town located in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Examining the ongoing compensation processes in the aftermath of this catastrophic incident, the research project seeks to answer the question how the perception of social and moral responsibilities is related to processes of legal mitigation and reparation in a post-disaster context.
