From School English to Academic English

Content Are you required to submit essays or assignments in English? And does it seem like a big jump from school English to writing university-level, scientific texts in English? This workshop is designed to help students with limited experience in academic writing in English.

The workshop will provide participants with an introduction to academic writing, including helpful input on the language used, structure, the potential pitfalls, useful resources and strategies for improving and editing texts. All participants will be given individual feedback and will therefore leave the workshop with a better awareness of their strengths and a “to-do” list of areas to work on.

In detail, the following contents will be covered:
- Defining academic writing (conventions, forms and features)
- Differences between German and English academic texts
- Constructing effective paragraphs
- Strategies for improving readability
- Improving coherence and flow
- Common language errors and potential pitfalls
- Useful resources, incl. phrasebank
- Editing and improving your own texts
- Peer-editing
