The association "Freunde der Universität Mainz e.V." was founded in 1951 and is made up of members and alumni of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, as well as personalities from public life, economy, liberal professions, the service sector, and politics. The association currently has 900 members and is open to all citizens. The goal of the association is to support research and teaching at JGU and to foster the close connection between the university, the city of Mainz, and the region, as well as between the university and its alumni. It issues invitations to events held by the university and to its own events.
Member contributions and donations to the association "Freunde der Universität Mainz e.V." have currently raised around 6 million euros to provide "unbureaucratic" support for research and teaching at Johannes Gutenberg University.
