The purpose of the foundation is to support teaching and research at Mainz University. This purpose is to be achieved first and foremost by creating and maintaining an endowed professorship.
The goal of the foundation is to invite outstanding scientists and representatives from public or cultural spheres to Mainz University. Decisive factors in the appointment include the reputation of the persons and the interdisciplinary approach of their work.
With the guest professor based with General Studies at the university, the foundation aims to
. add a fresh approach to teaching and research,
. provide incentives to integrate the individual sciences,
. offer new opportunities for contact and cooperation,
. give the general public the impression of a living science,
. increase the attraction of Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz
The foundation sees itself as an investment in education and science and consequently as an investment in the future.

With the launch of the foundation on March 1, 2000, the association "Freunde der Universität Mainz e.V." created the non-profit "Johannes Gutenberg endowed professorship" based in Mainz. It is a foundation under public law with its own legal personality. It exclusively and immediately serves non-profit purposes in accordance with §§ 51ff. of the tax code.
The purpose of the foundation is to support teaching and research at Mainz University. This purpose is to be achieved first and foremost by creating and maintaining an endowed professorship. Other measures for fulfilling the foundation's purpose may only be carried out with funds not needed for the endowed professorship during the fiscal year.
Any available funds must be applied only to the foundation's purpose. The foundation carries out its tasks
. from the income of the foundation assets,
. from third-party donations, where they are intended for this purpose and are not subject to constraints or conditions.
