With his series of events on "Art and resistance" and the current creation of culture, Peter Ruzicka is providing a platform for high-level debates, controversial from both a social and cultural political point of view. His lectures invite listeners to address the tasks and self-image of art and culture and their new focus in light of the post-modern era. Musical contributions, video clips, and a concert in the state theater invite participants to open up to modern music.
According to Peter Ruzicka, art and science have been undergoing a paradigm shift for some time. This change in approach is resulting in a movement away from the post-modern perceptions which have been dominant for at least two decades. It moves away from the aimless circles, the arbitrariness of the characters and symbols, and away from the surface and fun-loving culture which threatens to flood and take over our society. The "second modern era" not only refers to a new understanding of "progress," but also to resistance and opposition, with a new form of enlightenment. It is a political dimension of thought and action based on artistic developments.
As a composer and conductor, director, and cultural manager, Peter Ruzicka is destined in a truly special way to explain the wide variety of different aspects of the topic with artists, art critics, art historians, and scientists. Because art and science never remain detached and neutral from their presence, but are constantly challenged in a critical manner from within, resistance is always a central aspect of both. In ten evening events, Peter Ruzicka and his guest speakers, all major names helping to shape culture in Germany at the present time, will discuss art and resistance and the emergence of a "second modern era." The lecture program will be enhanced by artistic contributions from Mainz University and the Institute for Theater Studies at our university, as well as concerts in the State Theater of Mainz.
