Lecture series 2006: What is reality? Fundamental issues and technological developments in quantum experimentation

Prof. Dr. Anton Zeilinger is regarded all over the world as an authority in the fields of quantum physics, quantum communication, and quantum cryptography. Under the central question "What is reality?," his lectures will address "Fundamental issues and technological developments in quantum experimentation."

In his lecture series, Anton Zeilinger will base his approach on the key laws of quantum physics. They contradict the general rules of "common sense." Quantum physics forces us to abandon our traditional perceptions and thought processes. It opens up a subatomic world, in which a whole host of certainties from our everyday experience go out the window. In the world of quantum physics, categories such as space, time, and causality, which we usually take for granted, no longer apply. In their place, the terms coincidence and information increase in significance. So the world is a coincidence? So what is reality and what does it mean? Quantum physics obviously asks fundamental questions regarding our scientific world view. Zeilinger stresses, "our view of the world is by no means set in stone. We have only just begun to think about it." This means that we have to address the philosophical consequences of new findings and reflect on the impact they have on the way we view the human race.

The worldwide reputation of Anton Zeilinger is due in particular to his research based on practical application. Three major projects are at the heart of this work: teleportation, quantum cryptography, and the quantum computer. Zeilinger and his team have proven that teleportation, or "beaming" as it is known in science fiction films, is basically possible. While "beaming" people is set to remain the stuff of science fiction, the technological opportunities afforded by quantum teleportation are enormous: quantum cryptography enables secure information transfer, while quantum computers could be set to fundamentally change our daily lives.
