Migration and temporality are intertwined in many ways and at multiple scales. In individual lives, migration entails profound changes and the confrontation with one's personal past and future. Temporalities structure migration experiences when refugees are granted temporary protection, migrant workers are offered temporary employment and residency rights, and undocumented people live with uncertain future prospects. Societal participation is also often accompanied by the submission to a specific time regime, such as those of education and work. The governance of migration finds its counterpart in the governance of migrants' temporal relationships and experiences, in the bureaucratic routines and opaque time-bound procedures of submitting and processing applications. Migration control also happens with the help of time - sometimes in the form of accelerated legal adjustments in "times of crisis", but sometimes also through painful postponement when the urgency apparently has passed. By directing our attention to the entanglement between migration and time, we also illuminate processes of othering that accompany patterns of social inequality, as well as forms of resistance and adjustments to institutions and their policies. In the course of this semester, we will deal with this entanglement of migration and time, which is currently receiving particular attention as a "temporal turn" in migration research, using mainly texts in English language.
