Contents

Argentina has often been presented as an exceptional case within South America: As a quasi-European country that was considered the world's "granary" and an emerging economic power at the beginning of the 20th century. However, the (self-)representation as a quasi-European country always left out large parts of the indigenous and Afro-Argentine population. In the past decades, the country has been shaken by several crises, experienced military dictatorships as well as the re-establishment of democracy and reported state bankruptcy several times. Such experiences of fundamental change have altered social structures and called into question existing forms of social participation and self-perception, but they have also opened up space for the renegotiation of social norms and alternative ways of life.

In this regional seminar, questions of belonging and participation serve as a common thread for our exploration of issues that are relevant to the country-specific and larger regional context. Based on a joint reading of historical and anthropological literature, we will focus on topics such as migration, negotiations of belonging along lines of race and class, populist politics and popular economies, as well as struggles about politics of memory and political and economic participation as they emerge in extremely unequal urban contexts.
