For Haitians in the diaspora, Haitian vodou forms a central point of reference for situating the self and the migrant community in the face of changing living conditions. The spirits of vodou in particular, imported into the New World from West Africa with the slave trade to follow the migrants to NorthAmerica have once again become an essential part of a diaspora and adapted to a new surrounding. The book considers the importance of vodou for Haitian men, women and youth in Montreal, Canada, concentrating on the prominent role of vodou spirits and their transformation in the context of migration. Erzulie, the spirit of love, seduction and motherhood, Ogou, hero of war, victory and power, and the Marassa, the twins, who stay unpredictable and avoid the seriousness of human life, serve as flexible imaginary templates, which are used in order to reflect and to perform individual as well as collective identities in relation to a pluricultural setting.

Le vodou haïtien, religion populaire, met à la disposition des Haïtiens dans la diaspora un système référentiel central pour l'orientation de leur propre personne, mais aussi pour celle de la communauté des migrants dans son entièreté, vu la transformation de leurs conditions de vie. Les esprits vaudou, en particulier, après avoir été déportés par les croyants d'Afrique de l'Ouest dans le Nouveau Monde, ont fait partie une nouvelle fois d'une diaspora à travers la migration vers l'Amérique du Nord et se sont de nouveau adaptés aux exigences qui ont changé. Le livre s'interroge sur la signification qu'a la religion traditionnelle pour les femmes, pour les hommes et pour les jeunes Haïtiens à Montréal, Canada, et se concentre en particulier sur la position éminente des esprits du vodou et sur leur transformation dans le contexte migratoire. Erzulie, l'esprit de l'amour, de la séduction et de la maternité, Ogou, l'esprit des guerres, du triomphe et du pouvoir et les Marassa, les jumeaux, qui restent imprévisibles et qui restent en dehors du sérieux de la vie humaine - ils servent en tant que modèles imaginaires flexibles, dont se servent les migrants pour refléter et représenter des identités individuels et collectives vis à vis d'un environnement pluriculturel.
