The reflexive turn in migration research refers to a paradigm shift that increasingly shaped migration studies over the past decade. Since then, migration has been viewed less as a societal "special area," in which "migrants" are seen separately from "citizens" with specific experiences and problems. Reflexive migration research calls for an examination of migration as the result of overall societal knowledge and power structures through which migration as a phenomenon comes into being. Over a contested process marked by power asymmetries, migration is (de)thematized, (de)problematized, and linked to other societal developments. In this way, the production of migration not only creates, stabilizes, or changes movements of people in geographical space but also societal orders and bodies of knowledge.Dates
