Relatedness is a central concept in cultural and social anthropology. Through physical, emotional, material, political, legal and spatial ties of individuals and groups, social relations are constantly renegotiated, individually experienced, and shaped in a variety of ways. In this seminar, these basic assumptions will be used as an analytical framework and reflexive tool to understand the wide range of institutions, practices, ideas and performances through which people relate to one another and the world. We will work mainly with texts in English language and make use of ethnographic examples from all world regions, and ask how relationships are constituted and provided with meaning in different constellations.Dates
