Contents

One of the fundamental tasks of experimental physics is turning data points into insights into the physical world. This usually means doing some form of statistical analysis. In this course we will explore different ways how this is done in practice in the High Energy Physics (HEP) context, and discuss the theoretical backgrounds of these methods.

By the end of the course, the students should be able to

1. Understand the different concepts of uncertainty
2.
3. Statistical variance
4. Confidence intervals
5. Credible intervals

• Perform parameter fits of models to data points
• Unfold measured distributions to their true counterpart
• Deal with systematic uncertainties in a robust manner
• Understand the assumptions that go into different analysis methods and when they break down
•
We will do practical exercises using Python and its scientific computing ecosystem (NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, etc). Students can use different programming languages or libraries if they prefer, but must work out problems on their own in that case.
