Instructors: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martin FertlShortname: 08.128.805
Course No.: 08.128.805
Course Type: Vorlesung/Übung
Requirements / organisational issues
This class will discuss the state-of-the-art experimental tests of the standard model of particle physics with an emphasis on low-energy precision experiments using neutrons, neutrinos, and muons either as bare or bound particles. The class will be co-tought by Prof. Fertl and Prof. Poll with guest lectures where appropriate. The class and exercises are integrated with each other.
To be able to follow the class and introduction to nuclear and particle as well as atomic physics is expected.
Anwesenheitspflicht
The teaching concept for this class consists of several elements. The frontal lecture style should be the smallest part of the class. We strongly believe that the discussion of concrete questions, arising from upfront reading of selected scientific papers, is highly efficient and engaging. But we can only answer the questions with the students if they attend the classes.Recommended reading list
The lecturers will provide the relevant selection of standard books and up-to-date review articles at the beginning of the class.Contents
This class will discuss the state-of-the-art low-energy precision tests of the standard model. The semester will be roughly subdivided into tests using neutrons and muons, as well as neutrinos.
Tests with bare neutrons will cover the neutron lifetime, the search for the neutron electric dipole moment, and neutron decay correlation coefficient measurements. Bare muons will be discussed with respect to the most precise measurement of the muon anomalous magnet moment and the determination of the muon lifetime.
Tests with muons bound in atomic systems allow the determination of nuclear charge radii to extreme precision and puts out understanding of nuclear forces to stringent tests.
The experimental approaches to determine the neutrino mass scale will be discussed.
