Requirements / organisational issues

The lecture connects to the content of "Experimental Physics B (Nuclear and Particle Physics)" and "Particle Detectors". It should enable a deeper understanding of detection techniques in particle physics.

By default, the lecture is held in English. German is possible upon mutual agreement.

Anwesenheitspflicht

There is no strict compulsory attendance, but regular active participation in discussion segments during the lectures is expected.

Contents

In this course we will examine the effect of scintillation and the Vavilov-Cherenkov effect in detail. In particular, we will discuss how scintillation light and Cherenkov light can be used to detect radiation and particles in particle detectors.

We will learn how to use such particle detectors using examples from collider physics (e.g. CMS, ATLAS), neutrino physics (e.g. Double Chooz, SNO, JUNO, Super-Kamiokande), searches for dark matter (e.g. XENON, AMS), cosmic ray observatories (e.g. Pierre Auger) and medical physics (e.g. PET-scanner).

Towards the end of the semester, we will look at new ideas for scintillation and Cherenkov detectors. These are currently being developed in Mainz, among other places, and could be used in particle physics or medical physics in the next few years.
