Critical approaches to digital logisticsThe linkages between media and globalization have been explored mostly in terms of how the world is represented in media, and how media link people together in different ways. In our digitalized and data-driven world, however, questions of logistics have become increasingly important. Logistical media affordances are essential to processes ranging from the micro-management of everyday life, including a wide range of mobile apps and platforms, to the tracking and monitoring of global container traffic. At the same time, the circulation of data per se constitutes a key element of digital logistics and a means of economic extraction. This specialization course introduces and discusses a set of critical approaches to digital logistics and its social consequences. Starting out from the fundamental meaning of “logistical media” and the role of such media in globalization processes in terms of navigation, coordination and orchestration, the course closes in on the platform economy and the current “logisticalization” of human lives. Students will read and discuss literature from an interdisciplinary research area (e.g., human geography, media and cultural studies, sociology, and science and technology studies). At the end of the course, the students will write and orally present an academic paper dealing with the implications of digital logistics.
