The objective of this seminar is twofold: first, to deepen and apply the knowledge of media geography theory acquired in the winter semester; and second, to explore the relationship between geography and different media formats, and the ways in which they can be researched. The seminar will be conducted in interactive sessions, during which the relevant topics will be explored. The aim of the seminar is to deepen students' knowledge of media geography, so that they will be able to apply this knowledge to contemporary research topics and everyday contexts. The seminar will explore the connection between geographical perspectives and media formats, as well as specific subdisciplines of media geography. Students will translate these topics into a final project (multimedia portfolio) and gain skills in the field of academic blogging.

Requirements

1)       Active participation in the seminar:
The seminar will combine theory-driven sessions, in which fundamental texts and theoretical frameworks will be examined, with applied sessions, in which selected topics will be explored and reflected upon.

2)      Prepare a topic (see below) | Teams: 2-3 students
In accordance with the seminar concept, topics should be approached from both a theoretical-conceptual perspective and an applied perspective.

  1. Bibliography: Compile a reference list comprising approximately 10-15 academic sources relevant to the chosen topic. Identify 1-2 papers or chapters that serve as suitable introductions to the topic. Additionally, please name an empirical, academic study that piques your interest.
  2. Presentation: Consider an approach that you would like to use to convey the topic to your fellow students. This should not necessarily be a conventional PowerPoint presentation, but rather an interactive approach. You may also design small excursions, workshops or projects that are based on the respective medium itself (e.g. soundwalk, reflective photography, mapping, etc.) and/or include learning environments outside the seminar room (e.g. local places, museum, city tour, etc.). Ideally, the proposed ideas should be realizable within the time frame of one seminar session (approx. 90 minutes).

3)       Multimedia Portfolio

In the final project, which will be evaluated as a module performance, you will explore your topic through the creation of a multimedia portfolio. A workshop will be held in July to develop ideas and explore modes of presentation, and you will have the opportunity to work on your project over the summer. The submission date is 1 November 2026, and detailed information on the scope and requirements will be provided in the final session.
