This year’s research workshop will take us to the Middle Rhine Valley, one of the most famous landscapes in Germany and epitome of the so-called “rhine romantic”. Historical castles, vineyards and rock formations (particularly the “Loreley”) characterize the region and contributed to the official classification "UNESCO World Heritage Site". However, despite being a hotspot of (international) tourism (e.g. around Rüdesheim and the Loreley rock), the region suffers from structural weaknesses, infrastructural problems, vacancy and shrinkage. To tackle these problems, development programs have been implemented. In 2029, the Federal German Garden Show takes place in the Upper Middle Rhine Valley which can be seen as an example of an "eventization" of regional development (idea/hope that long-term positive effects for the region emerge from a temporal event).Students will develop an own research project in the region which can address different topics, such as mediatization of a landscape, touristification and commercialization, eventization of regional development...In small teams, they will collect and analyze own empirical data in the Rhine region. A research report has to be submitted at the end.
In the seminar sessions, methodological foundations for conducting an own reserach project from start to finish will be laid. Students will develop and present their research topic and design in the seminar. In mid/end of July (probably in the week 13 to 17 July), we will travel to the region to familiarize ourselves with the region and collect first data. In addition, students will organize own (day)trips for collecting their data (the use of public transportation with the "Deutschlandticket" is recommended).
The workshop will be organized in daytrips. However, there might be expenses which have to be covered by the participants (for entrance tickets etc.). The research workshop requires the willingness to spend much time outside and for quite long walks.
