This course explores selected topics in hadron, nuclear, and particle physics, with a particular focus on electron scattering experiments conducted at accelerator facilities such as MAMI and MESA here in Mainz.

The lecture begins with a concise historical overview of elementary particles, nuclear physics, and the fundamental interactions, providing a foundation for the advanced subjects that follow. Key theoretical concepts underlying the experimental measurements are introduced, including the Dirac equation, scattering theory, and, in particular, the scattering of highly relativistic electrons.

Completed, ongoing, and planned experiments are then discussed in detail. Topics include measurements of electromagnetic form factors and charge distributions, the proton radius puzzle, parity-violating electron scattering, studies of nuclear forces in few-nucleon systems, measurements of observables relevant to nuclear astrophysics, and searches for particles from a hypothetical dark sector. The course also addresses the experimental requirements and techniques essential to these investigations, with an emphasis on core detector components.

To deepen understanding, the course includes regular in-class exercises and occasional reading assignments related to the lectures. The program is complemented by tours of the MAMI and MESA accelerator facilities.
