JGU Jogustine Courselists

Teilchenphysik

Instructors: Univ.-Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Gradl
Shortname: 08.128.738
Course No.: 08.128.738
Course Type: Vorlesung/Übung

Requirements / organisational issues

The lecture builds on the material treated in the lecture "experimental physics B (Nuclear and Particle Physics)" - successful completion of that course is strongly recommended.

The lecture will be held in English.

Digital teaching

Further information, additional material for the lecture, and everything connected to the exercises will be provided on the JGU Moodle instance at
https://moodle.uni-mainz.de/course/view.php?id=177393

Recommended reading list

M. Thomson, Modern Particle Physics, Cambridge University Press (2013)
D. Griffiths, Introduction to Elementary Particles, Wiley-VCH (2008)
F, Halzen and A. D. Martin, Quarks and leptons: an introductory course in modern particle physics, Wiley, 1984
Ch. Berger, Elementarteilchenphysik (4th ed), Springer (2014)

Contents

The lecture will treat the composition of matter and the interactions between elementary particles.  The strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions are discussed in the context of the foundational experiments of the field.  The following topics will be touched:

  1. Overview of experimental methods
  2. Kinematics of scattering processes at high energies
  3. Evaluation of scattering cross sections (Feynman graphs, perturbation theory)
  4. Fundamental experiments on the strong, weak, and electromagnetic interactions
  5. Symmetries and local gauge invariance
  6. The Standard Model of Particle Physics, precision tests
  7. Electroweak symmetry breaking, the Higgs mechanism
  8. Particle mixing, CP violation
  9. Search for physics beyond the standard model
