Contents
Condensed matter physics deals with macroscopic and microscopic properties of condensed matter. The lecture covers both the basics of solid state physics and an introduction to the physics of soft matter. Solid state physics is the physics of a large number of chemically bound atoms which makes it necessary to use new solid-state models. Despite some approximations, these models allow a quantitative description of important properties of solid state. The aim of this lecture is to explain the most important of these models and thus provide the tools for understanding the current topics that are important for research and development.Topics:

- Structure analysis via diffraction
- Lattice dynamics (phonons)
- Thermal properties
- Electronic structure
- Semiconductors
- Magnetism

Additional information
Besides the lectures on mondays 4-6 pm and thursdays 10am-12pm in 05 127 Lorentz room, there will be two tutorials which will take place in the Lorentz room as well. One tutorial will be on mondays 8-10am, the other mondays 2-4pm. We expect active participation from all course participants.Please, join the first meeting on Monday, April 13, at 2:15pm in the Lorentz room to discuss lecture hours and tutorials!
The exam will be a written exam on July 29 from 9am to 11am in room 00 319 C 01.
