M3-MA Advanced Seminar: Theoretical approaches to Media Geography
Instructors: Dr. Elisabeth SommerladShortname: M3-MA
Course No.: 09.050.455
Course Type: Hauptseminar
Requirements / organisational issues
The aim of this seminar is to acquire the relevant theoretical fundamentals of media geography and the skills enabling students to critically deal with a globalised and media-charged day-to-day-world in a problem-oriented manner. The seminar consists of two parts (winter & summer). In the first part of the seminar, a focus is set on theoretical fundamentals of media geography. The participants deal with established specialist articles on various media geography-related topics (see below). At the heart of the course is the intention to develop a media-geographically sensitive reading and to embed the subject in a theoretical framework. Each participant prepares mandatory reading texts as well as one session as an ‘expert’. In our weekly meetings, we discuss the readings and refer to examples from everyday life to understand their relevance for human geography. On successful completion of this course, participants should be able to:
· Demonstrate sound knowledge of theories of media geography
· Develop an understanding of why media-geographic theories are relevant for understanding everyday phenomena
· Deepen their knowledge on media geography in the second part of the seminar (summer semester) and implement an application-oriented project on media geography
Detailled information on coursework, readings, requirements and evaluation will be shared in the first session.
