David Griffiths, "Introduction to Elementary Particles"

Contents

This lecture offers an introduction to modern particle physics, covering both key experimental methods and essential theoretical principles. It includes a comprehensive discussion of the Standard Model, which describes all known elementary particles and their interactions through the electromagnetic, weak, and strong forces. It covers the experimental techniques used in particle physics, for example the ATLAS detector at the CERN LHC. The lecture al
so highlights the limitations of the Standard Model, exploring unanswered questions in particle physics that are driving current and future research efforts (that the student may soon embark on, starting with a masters thesis).

Topics Covered:

  1. Kinematics of relativistic particle scattering
  2. Calculation of cross-sections using Feynman diagrams and perturbation theory
  3. Overview of particle detection techniques and accelerators
  4. Symmetries and gauge theories
  5. The weak interaction and the Higgs Mechanism
  6. Strong interaction, quarks, hadrons, and flavour
  7. The Standard Model and precision tests of its predictions
  8. Modern collider physics
  9. Open questions and unsolved mysteries of the universe
