Requirements / organisational issues
The course builds on basic knowledge of the fundamentals of particle and nuclear physics, as e.g. contained in the lecture "Experimentalphysik 5b (Nuclear and Particle Physics)". Knowledge from the lecture "Particle Physics" will be beneficial, but is not strictly necessary.Language of instruction will be English.

In this lecture, we plan to study in detail some of the key experiments in nuclear and particle physics, both historically speaking as well as modern developments. We will discuss both the background and motivation behind those experiments, but also plan to work in detail using the scientific publications. While of course the physics will play an important role, the scientific methodology will play in important role in this lecture.A concrete example: The discovery of the Higgs boson
- for the motivation, we will discuss spontaneous symmetry breaking and the Higgs mechanism
- we will study how the Higgs boson can be produced and how it decays
- so that we can then study how it was discovered at the LHC
- this will include also statistical methods: what does a 5.9 sigma observation of a new particle mean, and how is that value determined?
Outside of the physics topics related to the key experiments that will be discussed, we plan to introduce statistical methods, different methods for particle detection, simulations for the determination of efficiencies, discuss systematic uncertainties and how to deal with them and more - always related to concrete applications in noteworthy discoveries.
