Geographies of healthIn this seminar, we focus on current debates around health and geography. The Covid-19 pandemic has brought the interest in health to the fore, but health geographies entail much more – what they have in common is analysing health as connected to a multitude of societal issues. In this seminar, we will work with different perspectives to discuss disparities and inequalities of health structures in local and global contexts.
We begin with a short historical perspective on health, security and biopolitics. We then take a closer look at three areas of recent research on entanglements of health with socio-political issues:
- The economization of health and questions of health security and preparedness
- The entanglement between health and the environment, debates on ‘One Health’ and more-than-human approaches to health
- Reproductive health and care, bodies, technologies, and clinical labour
We can discuss further areas of interest in the first session of the seminar.
The seminar will be a text-based discussion format, which means participants are expected to prepare readings for each session and should actively participate in the discussion. Furthermore, each participant will prepare one ‘text expertise’ of an additional text (choice of topic/session to be discussed in the first session). At the end of the semester, the participants will submit an academic paper (or an equivalent task) which constitutes the final exam.
