Contents

In this lecture we will introduce symmetries as an essential building block for the construction of, in particular, effective theories. We will discuss the consequences of these symmetries and their breaking for observables. The goal will be to understand the chiral symmetry and its spontaneous breaking as a cornerstone for the effective description of the strong interaction (QCD). To this end, the lecture will cover mesonic and baryonic chiral perturbation theory (ChPT).
