This course explores selected topics in hadron and particle physics, with a particular focus on electron scattering experiments conducted at accelerators such as MAMI and MESA here in Mainz.

The lecture begins with a brief historical review of elementary particles, nuclear physics, and fundamental interactions, providing a foundation for the advanced topics. This introduction covers key theoretical concepts underlying the measurements, including the Dirac equation, scattering theory, and, more specifically, the scattering of highly relativistic electrons.

Both completed and planned experiments are then discussed in detail, including measurements of proton form factors and the associated proton radius puzzle, studies of the neutron’s charge distribution, parity-violating electron scattering, investigations of nuclear forces in few-nucleon systems, and searches for particles of a dark sector. The course also examines the experimental requirements and techniques central to these studies, with an emphasis on core detector components.

To deepen understanding, the course includes regular in-class exercises and occasional reading assignments related to the lectures. The program is complemented by a tour of MAMI and MESA.
