Contents


The lecture deals with the fundamental constituents of matter and the interactions between these constituents.  The electromagnetic, strong, and weak interactions are explored, both from a phenomenological and from the experimental side.  In particular, the lecture will deal with these topics:

  1. Overview of experimental methods (particle accelerators, detectors)
  2. Kinematics of scattering processes at high energies
  3. Calculation of cross sections (Feynman diagrams, perturbation theory)
  4. Representative processes of the electromagnetic, strong, and weak interactions
  5. Symmetries and local gauge invariance
  6. Standard Model of particle physics, precision tests
  7. Spontaneous breaking of the electroweak symmetry via the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism
  8. Quantum mechanical mixing, CP violation in the quark and neutrino sector
  9. Search for physics beyond the Standard Model
