Contents

The course provides an overview of the statistical methods to analyze data and offers an introduction to Monte
Carlo techniques. While the methods are often introduced with the help of examples taken from the areas of
particle, hadronic and nuclear physics, we recommend the lectures also to students specializing in other fields.
The goal of the course is to provide a solid basis that helps to successfully complete a master’s thesis in a related
area of physics.

The following areas shall be covered:
• Probability distributions and the statistical description of data;
• error propagations and the estimation of parameters;
• significance levels and decisions on hypotheses;
• Monte Carlo methods, as well as
• Statistical analysis methods.
