The course builds on basic knowledge of the fundamentals of particle and nuclear physics, as e.g. contained in the lecture "Experimentalphysik 5b (Nuclear and Particle Physics)".

Language of instruction will be English.

Contents

Within the scope of this lecture, the physics of strongly interacting particles, hadrons, will be discussed both from a historical perspective as well as using modern experiments. The following topics shall be discussed in detail:

  1. the quark model
  2. mesons and baryons
  3. wave functions, mixing angles
  4. isospin, hypercharge
  5. hadron masses
  6. conservation laws: angular momentum, parity, ...
  7. Dalitz plots, determination of a particles spin and parity
  8. electron-positron annihilation
  9. charmonium: e.m. transitions, Zweig-rule
  10. meson production off the nucleon
  11. meson production at the LHC
  12. exotic hadrons: a new particle zoo
  13. multiquark hadrons
  14. hybrid mesons
  15. the search for glueballs
