The course builds on the material covered in the quantum mechanics lecture. Therefore, you should have attended the quantum mechanics theory class QM1 before attending this course.

Contents

Understanding the structure of matter and in particular the experimental characterization and theoretical description of atoms is one of the biggest success stories in physics in the 20th century.

The goal of this experimental atomic and quantum physics lecture is:

  1. gain deeper insight into the physics of atoms by building upon the introductory (theoretical) quantum mechanics lecture
  2. understand the composition of multi-electron atoms
  3. learn the classification of energy levels by quantum numbers
  4. learn about basic molecular systems and their energy levels

After understanding the atomic structure, the main focus will lie on light-atom interaction. This will serve as an introduction to modern laser physics and quantum optics. In particular, modern applications of experimental quantum mechanics will be illustrated on practical examples and current research topics like

  1. lasers and the basics of (high precision) laser spectroscopy
  2. Ramsey spectroscopy to understand the working principle of atomic clocks
  3. laser cooling and traps for neutral atoms and ions

The exam is scheduled to take place on Februari 21st at 09:00. Prerequisite for taking the exam is the successful completion of exercises. These will be discussed in a two hours class on a voluntary basis.

Additional information

This course will be held in English. One of the exercise classes can be held in German upon request. If there is a need for an exam in German, please announce this during the first two weeks of the course.
